UVB Placement

The 12-inch Rule
Most UVB bulbs lose 50% of their output through mesh or screen. Place your T5 HO fixture no more than 12 inches from your basking spot — or go screen-free with a mesh top conversion kit.
Replace UVB bulbs every 6 months even if they still glow.
Humidity Control

The False Bottom Method
Layer 2–3 inches of hydroleca clay balls under a mesh divider, then add your substrate on top. The reservoir maintains ambient humidity without waterlogging roots or causing rot.

Probe Placement Is Everything
Place your thermostat probe directly on the basking surface — not in the air above it. Surface temps can be 20°F hotter than ambient air. A digital infrared temp gun is the most important tool you own.
Always measure with a temp gun before introducing your animal.
